More recently, the literary blog interviewed me about my writing process, and all things literary. Tanner on Technology, Tonight at Ukazoo

Technology, and its unending demand for our attention, may seem a black hole that threatens to suck up all of our time and energy. But technology can be an ally in our efforts to reach readers and other writers. What should a writer know about technology?

Ron Tanner, who knew nothing about technology 7 years ago and now runs his own online media company (wordrocketmedia.com), will share his insights and experience as a writer who struggled to learn and adapt to the demands of technology in the 21st century.

Ron Tanner's awards for writing include a Faulkner Society gold medal, a Pushcart Prize, a New Letters Award, a Best of the Web Award, and many others. He has won fellowships from the Copernicus Society, Sewanee Writers Conference, and the National Park Service, to name a few, and his stories and essays have appeared in dozens of literary magazines, including The Iowa Review, West Branch, and the Massachusetts Review. He is the author of A Bed of Nails (stories), Kiss Me Stranger (illustrated novel), and From Animal House to Our House: A Love Story (memoir). He teaches writing at Loyola University, and directs the Marshall Islands Story Project (mistories.org).

Atticus Authors in The Ivy

Just what will two Atticus authors be doing in the ivy this Saturday afternoon? Reading from their novels, of course!

The Ivy Bookshop, voted the best bookstore in Baltimore, will host Alex Kudera and me for a reading and book signing on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Where Do You Write?

Some authors will tell you that there’s a write place and time for every novel they write. That’s the case for me, as I explained in a recent Write Place, Write Time.

Write Place, Write Time is a blog devoted to the place where authors do their work.

Although I can more or less write anywhere, when I was asked to write about the place where I do most of my writing, I realized that at least a part of every novel draft I have written has been created, in part, at the same pine desk that once belonged to my father.

In the piece, I write about the desk and some of the things we share: a Don Quixote statue from Nizhniy Novgorod, a candleholder from St. Petersburg, a pen made of wood from a desk of the mayor of the city where I was born … and lots of books.

In fact, I’m at the old pine now, making eye contact with John Steinbeck as I work on my fiction. Back to it.
