Tracks … Will End Up On My Best Of The Year List

Savvy Verse and Wit is a blog dedicated to all literary and poetic works: critiques, reviews, editorial hints, and insights.

Earlier this year, Savvy Verse and Wit gave Tracks a glowing review. You can read it, and the conversation that resulted, at the following link.

http://savvyverseandwit.com/2012/01/tracks-by-eric-d-goodman.html

More recently, the literary blog interviewed me about my writing process, and all things literary. Some of the interesting questions involve my choice of Baltimore and the train itself as “characters” in the book, how long it took from opening line to final project, and whether some of the characters surprised me. I also talk about some of the writers who inspire me (and who had kind things to say about my writing), and some other great novels in stories I enjoyed.

Find out how Franklin, the conductor, gave me an unexpected turn by reading the interview at the link below.

Tanner on Technology, Tonight at Ukazoo

Technology, and its unending demand for our attention, may seem a black hole that threatens to suck up all of our time and energy. But technology can be an ally in our efforts to reach readers and other writers. What should a writer know about technology?

Ron Tanner, who knew nothing about technology 7 years ago and now runs his own online media company (
wordrocketmedia.com), will share his insights and experience as a writer who struggled to learn and adapt to the demands of technology in the 21st century.

Ron Tanner's awards for writing include a Faulkner Society gold medal, a Pushcart Prize, a New Letters Award, a Best of the Web Award, and many others. He has won fellowships from the Copernicus Society, Sewanee Writers Conference, and the National Park Service, to name a few, and his stories and essays have appeared in dozens of literary magazines, including The Iowa Review, West Branch, and the Massachusetts Review. He is the author of A Bed of Nails (stories), Kiss Me Stranger (illustrated novel), and From Animal House to Our House: A Love Story (memoir). He teaches writing at Loyola University, and directs the
Marshall Islands Story Project (mistories.org).

Directions to
Ukazoo Books: To reach Ukazoo Books by car, take I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) toward Towson. Take exit 27A for Dulaney Valley Rd/MD-146 S toward Towson. Dulaney Plaza will be on your right after approximately half a mile.

The event is free for Maryland Writers Association members or first time attendees, or $5 for the general public.

Rollicking Ride … Witty, Confidential Style

Charles Rammelkamp is the author of The Secretkeepers, Castleman in the Academy, and is editor of The Potomac, a literary journal.

He also happens to be a fan of Tracks: A Novel in Stories. Here’s what he has to say about it.

“Get on board Eric D. Goodman’s Tracks for a rollicking ride from Baltimore to Chicago with a passenger list of colorful characters, from a sleazy traveling salesman, an adulterous sculptress and a Holocaust survivor to a couple of kids in love, a woman returning home to Cincinnati from burying her parents in Baltimore, and a poet. Told in Goodman’s witty, confidential style, these stories – this long tale – are well worth the price of the ticket!”

Announcing the Kudera-Goodman Show!

For three nights only, you have the opportunity to join us for a special engagement! Atticus Authors Alex Kudera and Eric D. Goodman, are teaming up for a series of readings in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

(We’ve considered a couple of typos—a strategically placed n and accidental John instead of Eric—to help boost attendance. But we’re not certain that “an evening with John Goodman and Kundera” would necessarily draw a larger crowd.)

Three events are scheduled in this multi-city tour!

March 17, 2012 - Clarksburg, MD: Novel Places, 1 p.m., a reading with Atticus authors Alex Kudera and Eric D. Goodman at Novel Places, 23341 Frederick Rd., Clarksburg, MD

Where Do You Write?

Some authors will tell you that there’s a write place and time for every novel they write. That’s the case for me, as I explained in a recent Write Place, Write Time.

Write Place, Write Time is a blog devoted to the place where authors do their work.

Although I can more or less write anywhere, when I was asked to write about the place where I do most of my writing, I realized that at least a part of every novel draft I have written has been created, in part, at the same pine desk that once belonged to my father.

In the piece, I write about the desk and some of the things we share: a Don Quixote statue from Nizhniy Novgorod, a candleholder from St. Petersburg, a pen made of wood from a desk of the mayor of the city where I was born … and lots of books.

In fact, I’m at the old pine now, making eye contact with John Steinbeck as I work on my fiction. Back to it.

Visit me and my desk at Write Place, Write Time. And tell me: where do you like to do your writing?
